Greenwater/Easton - August 16, 2003

Doug and I went riding once again at Greenwater, on Saturday August 16th. We had intended to go camping this weekend, but due to other commitments, those plans were scaled back to a one-day ride. A person Doug has previously ridden with, Scott, also came along.
We started from 7030 at about 9am in the morning, and planned to continue to the top of Green Pass, and then head north towards Stampede and Tacoma passes. Near the top of Green the visibility dropped drastically, as did the temperature. At one point I was within 30ft of Doug, and he was a blurry shadow. Not yet to the top, I had my first (and only) problem of the day, that being that the gear shift on my bike decided to exit stage left. The bike had been in the shop (RMC) to checkout an oil leak from the prior ride, and they had apparently not bolted the gear shift back on tightly. Luckily, no pieces were missing, and it was only a few minutes delay.
We went north from Green towards Stampede pass, and came out to a lookout that was just above Lake Keechelus. We could see I-90 and Hyak/Snoqualmie Pass. From this point we looped back and headed towards Tacoma pass, and down into Easton, where we had lunch. We also topped off the bikes, and mine took 1.1 Gallons for 73 miles.
Leaving Easton we made the river crossing once again, climbed Tacoma Pass, and headed towards Green again. We decided to briefly drop down into Naches to check it out, and ran across a not so good sign, shown below. We decided that was our day, and turned around and came back to the trucks on 7030. We did checkout some culvert work they are doing at the end of the blacktop on Rd 70 though, and I'm somewhat confused as to where the term 'Culvert' comes in here, as this is a full blown water works project. The 2nd note of the day, my bike is still leaking some oil.
Total miles: 130

The opposite gravel wall is actually an earthen dam. It seeps water at a pretty good rate, pretty interesting. The 'road' is supposed to cross here, going from left to right. This whole project has been claimed to be a culvert replacement, pretty big culvert. Being the end of summer, it looks like time is running out on this project.

By the time I took this picture, we'd already crossed Green and Stampede passes. This is of the railroad tracks, looking SW, which travel towards Lester.

Lost Lake, with flowers in bloom. The road we were on continues back off our right shoulder, and then around the lake on the right hand side.

Another view of the same lake.

Scott and Doug, talking about the area and past camping trips.

Our first sighting of Lake Keechelus.

Closer to Lake Keechelus, looking north up the lake. I-90 is on the right hand side of the lake. The noise coming from the highway was pretty incredible, considering the distance.

Leaving the Keechelus area, we headed towards Easton. This bridge was washed out in the early/mid 90's, so we had to cross the river here.

We had lunch, and continued back into Naches before I took another picture. This is the sign that we saw, essentially stating that all ORV activity, unless you're street legal and on roads only, is banned.

On our way down Green Pass towards the trucks, this is looking South towards Ravens Roost.

There's a little (looks little from here) road in the valley down below, it's actually Rd 70. We are looking here at the spot where the blacktop ends, and there is currently some road construction closing the road.

We road past the trucks, and took a left on Rd 70, wanting to look at what was blocking Rd 70. These are the signs and barricade.

Doug, walking past some machinery into a newly dug gully.

The 'real' road is probably 50-70yds off of Dougs left shoulder. We are on a recently doug access road, that leads into a pit, apparently to place a culvert into for the river to drain through.
