We arrived at Fort Flagler on Friday the 24th, and after setting up camp, walked around the area a bit reaquanting ourselves with the campground. Saturday was mostly consumed with a slow 3.3 mile hike around the old fort and surrounding country side. We had a nice dinner that night, and the girls ate their share of smores. Sunday we packed up and went home, stopping for breakfast/lunch at the local cafe before heading out of town.

Now we're just being silly.

We're finally at the park, and the first order of business - more food.

DCP_5157.JPG
Had to stop for the obligatory snack.

Uncle Ed pulling the wagon, and Moira wants another ride. An inlet between with Indian island on the far side is in the background.

Looking from the seating area/mini mart to the loop we're camped on.

DCP_5160.JPG
There is a slide/jungle gym here now, the girls enjoyed that for awhile.

Another view towards our camping area, with a kite flying.

DCP_5166.JPG
I believe there's an actually seal pup in the picture. He wasn't very big. Mom was apparently out fishing.
|

DCP_5167.JPG
The girls saw the seal, and were having fun.

Looking east from the camping area. Our site was a short walk through tall grass from the beach.

DCP_5180.JPG
Look Mom, I can lift her. Delaney thinks this is hysterical.

DCP_5182.JPG
I seemingly multi-room 'structure' someone had built on the beach.

Walking down the beach some more. The wagon was okay on the sand, would have been nicer if it had its own motor.

DCP_5188.JPG
Looking out from a trail we found.
|

DCP_5189.JPG
Hard to see, there are a couple of steel rails extending over the edge of the bank here, underneath which the bank eroded away.

DCP_5219.JPG
Saturday morning, and we're going for a walk down the beach.
|

DCP_5220.JPG
Here we are starting on our walk which is supposed to take us up the bluff, and into a number of the old batteries and lookouts.
|

DCP_5221.JPG
This is the 'trail', actually an old road bed that apparently gets mowed. My kind of hiking.
|

DCP_5222.JPG
Delaney isn't too happy here, and we've only just begun.
|

DCP_5223.JPG
Looking over the bluff towards Pt. Townsend again.
|

DCP_5224.JPG
There was a searchlight here at one time.
|

DCP_5225.JPG
Rails on the floor extended out past the little fence, recently erected to keep people off of the erroding embankment.

This was quite the structure, with entrance through the staircase in the back.
|

DCP_5233.JPG
Here were are on the ground floor, looking up to the observation platform. Something was mounted in the center, not sure if it was a gun or search light.
|

DCP_5234.JPG
Another 'battery', this one quite a bit bigger. Each concave area housed a massive cannon - with rooms on eather side for storage.
|

DCP_5235.JPG
Ed is in a hallway beyond one of the rooms.

Onto the next site, and Delaney has finally woken up.
|

DCP_5245.JPG
|

DCP_5246.JPG
Moira is still running it seems, after another half mile or so.
|

DCP_5247.JPG
This was the largest battery at Flagler I believe. It's the only one we found with below ground storage areas, elevators, etc.
|

DCP_5248.JPG
The back of the battery, looking east.
|

DCP_5249.JPG
Looking at a staircase that leads down.

DCP_5250.JPG

|

DCP_5260.JPG
The top of an elevator, the wheel and motor were here.
|

DCP_5261.JPG
We assume the shells were lifted up and rolled onto this small platform, stopping against the raised teeth on the lower right. Those teeth were connected to a handle that would lower them so the shell could be rolled onto a cart.
|

DCP_5262.JPG
A walkway between gun emplacements.
|

DCP_5263.JPG
|

DCP_5264.JPG
|

DCP_5265.JPG
This was the only real item we found besides the elevator parts, a sing of some kind.
|

DCP_5266.JPG
The sink in the prior picture was to the left here in a separate room. This exits into the open.
|

DCP_5267.JPG
A broken light fixture, the only one we saw.
|

DCP_5268.JPG
On top of the batteries in the front, and we see some deer, looks like two young bucks.
|

DCP_5269.JPG
Almost to the main parade ground / museum area, and we come across a group of HAM radio operators.
|

DCP_5270.JPG
Moira got to talk very briefly with someone in Ohio.
|

DCP_5271.JPG
We're almost back to camp, after 3.3 miles. The weather was beautiful the entire walk, and continued this way for the rest of the day.
