A consistent favorite, we decided to start the summer camping season off with a trip to Fort Flagler. Early June can be risky as far as weather is concerned, but we lucked out (and continued to do so for the next three weeks), and had a great time. The girls loved playing on the beach, roasting marshmallows, and 'exploring'. This was only the 2nd trip with Juneau, but I think she even had a good time as well.

At the park, and out for a walk (well, Mom and Dad are walking).

This is actually near the parade grounds in front of the old officers barracks.

Walking up to the primary set of batteries.

The rack on the top right is where I assume shells were rolled out and onto carts. The shells came from below on a lift/elevator.

The inside of the rack - I'm assuming the springs in the picture kept the shell from rolling onto the cement floor (bad). There was a lever attacked to a connecting rod - which would (if not for the rust) lower the springs.

Looking up to some sort of observation area.

Looking down an elevator shaft.

Part of the apparent lift.img_1897.jpg=Just behind one of the main batteries (off to the right, out of picture), looking downstairs. Lots of rooms down there, even found one labeled "latrine".

Downstairs looking up. Our fearless dog Juneau didn't like it down here too much.

Hamming it up for the camera. From here it took only about 20-30 mintues to get completely dark.

Silly ham?
